‘Trance’ is a graphic score to evoke the sensation of euphoria within the body. It is a simple concept whereby each performer should follow a line and repeat the passage until they start to fall into a trance. They should gradually crescendo and diminuendo throughout, and play continuously until they lose their position in relation to the other players. At this point, they can only focus on their own sense of time. The line the player chooses should be treated like a Mantra.
Mantra - a repeated phrase that holds spiritual potency, spoken to enhance one-pointedness of the mind and bring us closer connection to the divine.
It is through this intensity of attention that the mind can stop altogether and ‘The Self’ can arise. When ‘The Self’ arises from the depths of the still body, a bliss-state can happen. The graphic score offers a type of mantra that the performer must focus on until they fall into a trance-like state of euphoria and bliss.
The image of the score also resembles a Yantra - (Sanskrit term): a symbol or image that you can gaze at during meditation to create one-pointedness of the mind, trance and focused attention. Whilst the performer should fixate on one line, they are also encouraged to softly gaze at the score as a whole and immerse oneself in the entire picture.
